The Saquarema strain is an exceptionally uncommon variation of Trichocereus pachanoi, initially discovered in Brazil by a German botanist. This particular plant received its name from the city of Saquarema, where it was first encountered. Situated in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Saquarema rarely yields Trichocereus specimens, making this discovery all the more remarkable.

The botanist successfully obtained some seeds from the base of the mother plant and nurtured a few seedlings, now referred to simply as Saquarema. This is an incredibly rare Trichocereus and is propagated via cutting from the main Saquarema clone. This was taken as a pup last year and has been growing out. This is the named clone which is rarely distributed and highly coveted.
